Medical Conditions
To ensure the health and safety of all students and comply with Florida school health guidelines, parents and guardians must notify the Health Office of any medical condition that may require monitoring, medication administration, emergency response, accommodations, or medical intervention during the school day, school sponsored activities, transportation, or Corporate Work Study placements.
Medical conditions that should be reported include, but are not limited to:
- Asthma
- Diabetes
- Food allergies
- Medication allergies
- Seizure disorders or epilepsy
- Severe insect allergies
- Heart conditions
- Sickle cell anemia
- Mental health conditions requiring medication or intervention
- Chronic or acute medical conditions
- Any condition requiring emergency medication, treatment, monitoring, or medical intervention during the school day
Action Plan Requirements
Students requiring medical care during the school day must have a current healthcare provider completed Action Plan on file.
Action Plans must:
- Outline daily care, emergency procedures, medications, activity restrictions, and accommodations, as applicable.
- Be renewed annually.
- Be updated whenever there is a change in diagnosis, treatment, or medication.
- Be submitted by the first day of each school year.
Medication Administration
Medication administration during the school day is discouraged unless necessary for the student's health and well being.
Parents or guardians must complete the appropriate Medication Consent Form for any prescription or over the counter medication administered at school.
Medication requirements include:
- Prescription medications must be provided in the original pharmacy labeled container.
- Over the counter medications must be in a new, unopened package with the manufacturer's label intact.
- Parents and guardians are responsible for providing prescribed medications and, whenever possible, preferred over the counter medications.
To support student health needs, the Health Office maintains a limited supply of commonly used over the counter medications that may be administered with appropriate parent authorization and in accordance with school policy.
Students who qualify to self carry certain medications should contact the School Nurse for additional information.
Injuries
Students who sustain an injury either at school or outside of school and require accommodations must provide documentation from a licensed healthcare provider.
Documentation must include:
- Diagnosis or injury
- Recommended treatment
- Required accommodations
- Expected duration of accommodations
Medical forms are available through the school website or by contacting the Health Office.
Concussion Protocol
Any suspected concussion should be evaluated promptly by a healthcare provider.
Students returning to school after a concussion must provide medical documentation supporting the diagnosis and any recommended accommodations.
The School Nurse will communicate approved accommodations with the student's counselor, teachers, Athletic Director, and other appropriate staff. Teachers and counselors will work with the student to develop an academic plan that supports recovery while maintaining academic progress.
Students remain responsible for completing coursework while under concussion protocol.
When to Keep Your Student Home
Students should remain home if they experience:
- A fever of 100.4°F or higher. Students must be fever free for at least 24 hours without fever reducing medication before returning to school.
- Vomiting or diarrhea within the previous 24 hours.
- Severe coughing or difficulty breathing.
- A rash of unknown origin, especially when accompanied by fever.
- Contagious illnesses such as conjunctivitis, strep throat, or impetigo until they have been on prescribed treatment for at least 24 hours.
- A head injury that has not been evaluated and cleared by a healthcare provider.
